“Anyone who has an interest in the drawings of young children will find Bob Steele’s book as useful as it is attractive. The connections he makes between graphic imagery, narrative form and personal expression he describes with clarity and authority supported by many examples of children’s drawings. His devotion to and love for his subject shine from every page.” Al Hurwitz, Hurwitz Center For Art Education, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore Md. USA. (Dr. Hurwitz is a well known art educator with a long and distinguished career as a writer, teacher and proselytizer.)

Bob Steele

Bob Steele was born in Mervin, Saskatchewan in 1925. He began teaching in four one-room rural schools while still going to university. On graduation he moved with his family to British Columbia where he was art teacher in three secondary schools. After teaching in the Vancouver School of Art for a year he accepted a post at the University of British Columbia where he taught studio print making and elementary and secondary art education for twenty-eight years. During these years  and after, he exhibited prints, drawings, paintings, and photographs locally and as part of the provincial and national art scene. On retirement, he began the Drawing Network to spread the word that children use drawing as a language medium and as an aid to gaining all aspects of literacy. He has published numerous articles and pamphlets and two books, “Draw Me a Story” (Portage and Main Publishers, Winnipeg.)  and "The Drawing Path for Children".
